Would you then say that the problem is a type of consolation? That our creating of problems is but a vain attempt to grasp a reality that perpetually escapes us?

You could say so. But I wouldn't necessarily call it vain, nor necessarily a consolation. It is a necessary part of thinking, but one which, if not pursued in an earnest way, can lead us further rather than closer from that which we seek: truth. A consolation is what it can easily lead into, yes. Stuck in a supposed knowledge of "what the problem is", one is blocked off from any further truth-seeking. But ask yourself, is this blocking off not something we often gladly partake in? Consoling ourselves that we know what is going on, and thus not having to look deeper? A look which, perhaps, is too painful.
